When it comes to having a full tooth restoration, oftentimes, the best option is to have a crown designed. A dental crown is generally made of a tooth colored porcelain (shade matched to fit your teeth color) and it will cover the entire exposed portion of the treated tooth. Crowns are designed to restore damaged teeth when a filling is not the answer. For instance, crowns are often the best option after a root canal or to replace a large, worn down or broken filling. They are also the only option for tooth reconstruction after a dental implant is placed.

To seat a crown, the site must be prepared. The preparation consists of removing enough exposed tooth to have something to seat and bond the crown to without interrupting your normal bite. We do a mixture of CEREC and lab designed crowns. CEREC crowns are all porcelain and created on site. If we send off for the crown to be designed, this requires two visits: one visit to prepare the tooth and take impressions and one visit to bond the newly designed crown. In between visits you will receive a temporary crown which is designed to be temporary and is held on with temporary cement.

Once your new crown is finished, it is time for it to be bonded. Bonding is done by placing a special resin into the base of the crown and curing it with a special ultraviolet light. The bond is done on a chemical level and is very strong. Once bonded, your new crown should look and feel like a normal tooth.
